Khuri Kayan — From Classroom to Community Field: A Journey of Leadership, Vision & Dedication

From the quiet classrooms of KnCC to the bright football fields of Nelson, Khuri Kayan has carried the heart of the Karenni spirit across continents — blending wisdom, work, and willpower into a life of service and purpose.

Early Beginnings in Karenni

Before the world called him “Vice-President,” Khuri was a young teacher and learner, devoted to uplifting those around him.

He graduated from the Karenni Leadership and Management Course (2010) — a program designed to prepare young minds to lead their people with compassion and courage. Shortly afterward, he began teaching computing at KnCC (2011–2012), guiding others in the skills of a new digital world.

His passion for growth and knowledge became the compass that would guide his entire journey.

A New Chapter in New Zealand

In 2012, Khuri Kayan resettled in Aotearoa New Zealand, bringing with him not only dreams of a better life but the deep responsibility of representing his Karenni heritage.

He completed a Pre-Trade Automotive Engineering program (2013) and worked in the automotive sector, learning the discipline of craft and precision.

By 2015, he transitioned into the wood industry, mastering CNC machine operation and detailing — a profession that merges creativity, technology, and skill.

Today, Khuri works at Kitchens Joinery as a CNC Operator, where each cut, curve, and design he creates reminds him that every small detail contributes to a larger purpose — much like community-building itself.

Leadership Through Action

Beyond his profession, Khuri’s greatest calling has always been community.He has served as Vice-President of the Karenni Association of New Zealand, and earlier as Vice-President of the Karenni Nelson Community (2019–2022).

During this time, he co-founded FC Nelson Karenni (2019) — a community football team born from the dreams of young Karenni athletes who longed to represent their people on the field.

Under Khuri’s leadership, the team rose quickly — winning the 2nd Division Championship in 2023 and earning promotion to the 1st Division.

But his vision went beyond victory. He understood that a true leader builds not just for today, but for tomorrow.

To keep the spirit of sport and unity alive, he also founded a Karenni Youth Team, mentoring young players and ensuring that FC Nelson Karenni continues to inspire generations to come.
