Dar Nai — The Son of a Healer, The Voice of a Nation

Born in a Karenni refugee camp along the Thai border, Dar Nai, 28, grew up surrounded by hardship — yet also by strength, compassion, and unity. When he was only eleven, his family resettled in the United States through the UNHCR Refugee Resettlement Program, carrying with them a legacy of service that began long before their journey overseas.

Fluent in Karenni, Karen, Thai, and English, Dar Nai began volunteering for his community at just fifteen. He started interpreting for families and elders, giving voice to those who could not speak for themselves. In 2020, he released his first song, transforming his emotions and memories into melody — a tribute to his people’s hope and endurance.

Together with a friend, he co-founded Kanyamaw Tribe, a nonprofit that turns art into purpose. Every design he creates becomes a source of support for Karenni IDP camps and community projects — proving that creativity can heal and empower.

Behind Dar Nai’s passion stands his father, Dr. Luka — a name that echoes with honor among Karenni people around the world. For more than three decades, Dr. Luka served as a medic in the refugee camp, tending to the wounded, comforting the sick, and saving lives when medicine and hope were both scarce.

During the long struggle for freedom and autonomy against the Burmese military dictatorship, when few qualified doctors remained, he became a symbol of courage. Side by side with the Karenni National Progressive Party (KNPP), he dedicated his life to protecting and healing his people — not for recognition, but out of pure humanity.

Today, he lives in the U.S. with his son, continuing to inspire a new generation through his quiet wisdom and unshakable spirit.

Now, Dar Nai follows in his father’s footsteps. While pursuing his nursing degree, he dreams of becoming a nurse practitioner, determined to carry forward the mission his father began — to heal, to serve, and to give back to the Karenni nation.
